Packing

The Packing section provides essential tools for organizing and optimizing your UV layouts within UDIM workflows. These features allow you to efficiently manage how UV islands are arranged and packed into UDIM tiles, improving texture resolution, export accuracy, and overall production efficiency.

  • Pack UV This function automatically packs UV islands based on a set of specified options such as scaling, margin, or rotation. It optimizes the use of available UV space by organizing the islands so that they fit together neatly. This is particularly useful when you want to ensure that no UV space is wasted, which can help improve texture detail and consistency during painting or baking.

  • Pack Island With this tool, all UV islands are transformed and scaled to maximize the use of the entire UV/UDIM space. By filling the available area as much as possible, it ensures that your textures are efficiently distributed, which is critical when aiming for high resolution and detailed texture mapping within each UDIM tile.

  • 1 - UVs to UDIM This step-by-step function is designed for multi-tile UDIM workflows. In this first step, each group of UVs (each group of UVs objects) is relocated into separate UDIM tiles, without being packed to be faster. This organization makes it much easier to assign and manage textures for distinct parts of your model, ensuring that each group is isolated into its own UDIM space for better control.

  • 2 - Pack UVs in UDIM Building on the previous step, this function packs the UV islands within each individual UDIM tile. It arranges the UVs within their respective tiles, ensuring optimal placement and scaling within each space. This targeted packing improves the efficiency of your UV space usage within every UDIM, helping maintain clarity and detail during texturing.

  • 3 - UVs to UDIM Packed Combining the previous two steps, this function automatically relocates each group of UVs (each group of UVs objects) into their designated UDIM tiles and packs them neatly within those tiles. This all-in-one option is perfect for streamlining your workflow: it swiftly organizes your UV layout across multiple UDIMs and optimizes the placement in a single automated action.

Note: The result of the three steps-- 1-UVs to UDIM, 2-Pack UVs in UDIM, and 3-UVs to UDIM Packed—will take longer to process in real use than what is shown in the GIFs on this website, which have been sped up for presentation purposes. However, performance improvements are planned for upcoming updates to make these operations significantly faster.

Why It’s Useful

  • Enhanced Texture Quality: By efficiently organizing and packing UV islands, these tools help maximize texture resolution and detail on your model. Clean, well-packed UVs mean that your texture maps are sharper and more precise.

  • Optimized UDIM Workflow: Separating UVs into distinct UDIM tiles simplifies the process of assigning different textures and materials. Whether you’re exporting to Substance Painter or preparing assets for high-definition rendering, these options ensure that each tile is utilized effectively.

  • Time Efficiency: Automating the process of UV organization minimizes the need for manual adjustments. With tools like UVs to UDIM Packed, you can quickly achieve a well-structured UV layout, reducing setup time and allowing you to focus more on creative work.

  • Flexible Pipeline Integration: Whether you need a general pack of UV islands or a specialized UDIM distribution, the diverse options in the Packing section let you tailor the process to your specific project requirements. This flexibility is essential for handling both simple and complex models.

The Packing section provides powerful, automated tools to organize and optimize your UV layouts. Whether you're packing islands or distributing them across UDIM tiles, these features help create a clean, efficient UV setup—improving texture quality, simplifying exports, and speeding up your workflow.
